The project e-Highway 2050 supports the planning of a pan-European transmission grid. The purpose is to guarantee a reliable electricity supply from renewable energies and a Europe-wide market integration. There is a modular development plan for possible electricity highways (e-Highways) and a pan-European grid structure in the project based on various scenarios for future power generation in 2020 and 2050.

In order to achieve objectives, follow the five-step-plan:

  1. Create scenarios for power generation and consumption
    The purpose is to develop and implement a method to design different long term scenarios for generation, consumption and substitution of electric energy. The scenarios are based on macroeconomic data. All tested scenarios take into account the balance between generated and consumed energy at European level.
  2. Create scenarios for generation and consumption sides
    The developed scenarios use assumptions for energy generation, consumption and substitution. Stochastic operations (renewable energy generation, uncontrolled consumption or breakdown in generation units) are simulated with their spatial and temporal correlation.
  3. Load flow simulation
    To identify reliable and efficient pan-European network structures, market and network simulations are used for every scenario.
  4. Attainable options in network structures
    It is first necessary to verify an improvement in critical aspects like overload, voltage or stability problems by the use of the selected options in network structures. Between 2020 and 2050 several successful network structures can be incorporated in the modular development plan.
  5. Implementation of selected network structures
    Proceeding socio-economic considerations will be taken into account with the development of implementation plans based on cost-benefit analysis for the period 2020 to 2050. Grid control models enable to analyse cross-border power flows.
